A Day of Shooting
in Chiang Rai

Shooting in Chiang Rai is different from anywhere else in Thailand. The temples here have completely distinct visual identities, and getting the most from them takes timing, positioning, and knowing which sections most visitors walk straight past.

Before the session we go through a route together. You pick the locations that interest you, or we put a plan together based on your travel style. Once the day starts, we move at a pace that lets you enjoy each place, not just tick it off a list.

Several of the most interesting stops sit up in the hills outside the city, so we arrange a private car and driver for the day. Transport between locations is included in the price.

  • Hair and makeup: available in Bangkok only, not on destination trips.
  • Outfits: we don't rent outfits, so please bring your own. Our stylist can advise you by message or video call (from 500 THB / $15).
  • Video: not included. A short teaser video, like the one included with proposals, can be added. Time spent filming is time not spent shooting stills, so the more video clips we capture, the fewer photos you receive. We don't make long or cinematic films.

Who Will Photograph You

One photographer covers your whole Chiang Rai day, from the route call to the final gallery. For most trips that is Jay or Kitsana.

Jay has been behind the camera since 2018. He spent his first three years as a photojournalist, so he reads people fast and catches real expressions between temple stops. He is calm with first-timers and speaks English and Russian.

Kitsana comes from journalism and documentary work. She has reported for Business Insider, and her community storytelling was exhibited in Washington, D.C. She notices the small details of a place, which suits carved temples and hill villages. She also shoots on film and speaks Thai, English and Mandarin.

Where We Shoot in Chiang Rai

The city and the hills around it offer real variety. These are the locations we use most, with honest notes on each one.

Temples

Four landmark complexes with completely different visual identities. This is one of the main reasons people book a session here.

Our most-used location in Chiang Rai. Some sections get crowded but the complex is large. Most visitors don't know the Cave of Art or the Ganesha Worship Hall even exist. Those areas are quieter and give us stronger backdrops.

The second most visited temple. Can be crowded, and getting a composition that works takes more skill. We rely on a handful of angles that separate you from the crowds and let the architecture read cleanly. The deep blue exterior is striking under afternoon light.

A dramatic red temple near the Guan Yin statue. Plenty to work with around the grounds, and worth pairing with the statue in the same stop.

A tall white statue with dragons on both sides. We usually favour around 3pm, when afternoon light reaches the statue directly. Getting a good composition with a person posing takes skill. Skip the lift inside. The exterior is where the frames are.
Parks & Outdoors
Session at Singha Park in Chiang Rai
Singha Park
Rent a golf cart or vintage car and drive a scenic loop. The full circuit takes 1.5 to 3 hours and passes cafes, a swan pond, art installations, flower fields, orchards, and lakes. Works well as a half-day stop on its own.
Garden of Reeds
Open park that works well for families. Flowers are at their fullest from late December through mid-February. Still a pleasant green setting outside that window.
Museums & Cultural Sites
Oub Kham Museum
Multiple rooms covering Lanna history with a private guide included. On our visit we had the museum and guide to ourselves, and it felt almost like a private tour. The interiors work well on camera and the history is genuinely interesting.

Skins, bones, wooden carvings, and dark interiors across a cluster of traditional buildings. The aesthetic is unlike anything else in the region. Worth a stop and a handful of frames.
Cafes & Restaurants
Chivit Thamma Da Coffee House
Riverside restaurant with good food and a calm water setting. Works as a break during a longer session or a standalone stop for lifestyle frames.
Aquatale Cafe
Charming cafe near the airport and Baan Dam Museum. Easy to pair with the Black House if you're covering that part of the city.

Lalitta Cafe
A note before you go: almost always packed. Queues for the waterfall spot can run 40 minutes. Visit on your own time rather than during a session, or skip it entirely in favour of less crowded locations.
Ozone Pamee Restaurant
A low-key restaurant near the orange garden that's easy to miss. Northern Thai food with Burmese influences, served in a genuinely cultural interior. You can wear traditional costumes while eating. Mountain views are outstanding.
Orchards & Plantations
November through February is when these locations are at their best. Cooler temperatures, fruit on the trees, vivid green hillsides.

Working orchard with a restaurant and hotel. Hand-pick oranges straight from the trees, which makes for natural, candid frames. A solid off-the-beaten-path stop with good food nearby at Ozone Pamee.

Terraced tea fields with a good cafe on site. Better for drone footage than portraits, but a pleasant stop if you drink tea or want something scenically different from the temples.
Doi Chang, Elephant Mountain

A scenic mountain village about an hour from the city. Viewpoints, coffee farms, and small Buddhist parks. The drive up is part of the experience.

Staying Overnight
We stayed at U SKY Hotel. Views are great but rooms get cold after sunset and there's no heating. Bring warm layers if you're staying up there.
Night Markets

Weekday markets are disappointing. Aim for Saturday or Sunday. More vendors, more energy, noticeably different atmosphere.

Hotels Worth Knowing

We haven't found a hotel in the city itself that stands out as a location. The most notable options are Anantara Golden Triangle and Four Seasons Tented Camp, near the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. Remote and costly, but genuinely cinematic.

Places to Skip
Long Neck Karen Village: we generally don't recommend spending paid session time here. The experience is heavily tourist-oriented, and other locations around Chiang Rai give us far more to work with.

Air Quality in Chiang Rai

Northern Thailand has a smoke season from roughly February through April, driven by agricultural burning across the region. March is typically one of the worst months.

Chiang Rai sits in the far north, which puts it among the most affected cities during this period. On bad days the air is visibly hazy, smells of smoke, and spending hours outside is genuinely unpleasant.

Check conditions before you travel. IQAir monitors Chiang Rai in real time. If your dates are flexible, November through January typically brings clearer skies and more comfortable conditions for outdoor sessions.

Cancellation Policy

If it rains on the day or the AQI rises above 150, you can reschedule or cancel for a full refund. No partial credits, no back-and-forth.

We'd rather cancel than deliver images taken in flat, smoky light.

Chiang Rai Photoshoot FAQ

How much does a Chiang Rai photoshoot cost?
A 4-hour session is ฿34,000, 6 hours is ฿44,000 and 8 hours is ฿50,000. Our flights, hotel and transport between locations are already in the price. Entry tickets and parking are paid separately.
Who will photograph us?
One photographer covers your whole day, usually Jay or Kitsana. We match you by language and shoot style, and you can ask for one of them by name.
What do the temples charge for entry?
The White Temple charges foreign visitors 200 THB since January 2026, and Thai citizens enter free. The Black House is 80 THB, and the Blue Temple is free (checked October 2026). We list the fees on your route when we plan it.
When is the best time of year to shoot?
November to January is best, with cool days and clear air. February to April is smoke season, and March is often the worst month. Check the AQI before you fix your dates.
What happens if it rains or the air is bad?
You can move the date or cancel for a full refund. This applies if it rains on the day or the AQI goes above 150.
What should we wear?
Cover your shoulders and knees for the temples. Light layers work well in the city. Bring a warm jacket if we go up to Doi Chang, because it gets cold after sunset.
How do we get between locations?
We arrange a private car and driver for the day, and it is included in the price. Several stops sit in the hills, and there is no faster way to reach them.
When will we get our photos?
Your edited gallery arrives within 3 days through a private download link. RAW files are free if you ask for them.
