Koh Tao Photographer: Portraits, Couples & Lifestyle Shoots on the Gulf Island
Koh Tao is a small island with a big visual range. You have turquoise bays framed by granite boulders, jungle hilltop cafes with panoramic views, and that particular Gulf light in the hours before sunset that makes everything look like it was shot on film. We have worked on the island and know exactly where to place you and when.
Why clients book us: Professional underwater housing for in-water shots most photographers cannot do, drone and video covered in the same session as stills, first-hand knowledge of every location on the island including logistics most visitors only find out on arrival.

Who This Is For
Most of our Koh Tao clients fall into one of these groups:
- Couples - honeymoons, anniversaries, or simply a trip worth documenting. We shoot couples sessions across Southeast Asia and know how to get natural, relaxed results without it feeling awkward.
- Solo travellers - people who want real travel photos, not arm-stretched selfies. Lifestyle shoots work well here: you at your actual holiday, in the places you actually visited.
- Professionals updating their profile - the island setting gives headshots and personal brand photos a distinct look that a studio backdrop cannot. If you need updated photos for apps or platforms, our dating app portrait sessions translate well to the island environment too.
- Wedding parties - Koh Tao is a growing destination wedding location. We handle pre-wedding, wedding day, and post-wedding sessions.
Best Locations for a Koh Tao Photoshoot
We have scouted the island thoroughly. Here are the spots we use most often and why.
The longest stretch of sand on the island, lined with restaurants, bars, and guesthouses. Photographs well at low tide when the sand is firm and reflective. The strip of activity behind the beach gives editorial shots a grounded, lived-in quality.
Nang Yuan IslandOur top pick for anyone who wants something truly distinctive. The sandbar connecting three rocky islets is unlike anything else in Thai waters: white sand, turquoise water in all directions, and clear sight lines to the horizon. Note: the beach closes to visitors at 3 p.m. - early afternoon gives you the best light and access. Drones are not permitted here, but underwater photography in the sandbar shallows works very well.
Sits on the quieter east coast, about ten minutes from Sairee by scooter. Large granite boulders wrap the bay and form natural frames for portraits. The reef here is in genuinely good condition and the water is clear enough for both above and below the surface. Small, and tends to stay quieter than the west coast beaches.
Ao TanoteOne of the island's most photogenic beaches: wide, clean, good for clear water shots. The fish here are unusually bold and tend to approach anyone standing still in the shallows, giving you strong underwater shots without anyone needing to dive or swim far.
Our favourite elevated location on the island. The viewpoint gives you layered bay views, a relaxed jungle atmosphere, and the kind of open sky that reads well in both portrait and wide shots. We often end sessions here - drinks and food, the light dropping over the Gulf, and no crowds.
A concave bay on the southeast coast - the name translates as "deep bay" - and the water holds colour even at low tide. Shark Island sits offshore as a natural backdrop. The coral reef on both sides of the bay starts in very shallow water, making this one of the better spots for underwater photography without needing to go deep.
Tucked below the southern hills, facing out toward Shark Island. The reef starts just a few metres from the shore and the coral is in good condition. Wade along the left side of the bay in the afternoon and you will regularly see baby blacktip reef sharks in the shallows - a detail that sets photos from this spot apart.
The southern village bay: calm, tree-lined, and easy to reach. The water is shallow and the bay is broad, which makes it good for golden-hour shots when the light comes from behind and reflects across the flat surface. From the beach boardwalk heading east you reach John Suwan Viewpoint, which gives a north-facing panorama across both Chalok and Shark Bay simultaneously.
Benjamin Baer Beach (Leo Beach)Known mainly as a music venue, but the stretch of coast here has some genuinely interesting photo compositions - rock formations, dramatic sight lines, and a slightly raw quality that works well for editorial and lifestyle shoots.
Video, Drone and Underwater Photography
We cover stills, video, drone, and underwater photography - all in one session, with the same photographer. Most clients on Koh Tao have to choose between these or hire separately. Here you do not.
For underwater work, we use a professional housing built for our camera and lens, not a waterproof phone case. It keeps full image quality intact in water up to around 1.7 metres - which covers the reef fish at Ao Tanote, the sandbar shallows at Nang Yuan, and the coral at Sai Daeng and Ao Leuk. Drone flights are available at locations that permit it. Nang Yuan does not allow drones on site, but most other spots on the island do.

Hotels That Work for Photography
We are often asked about accommodation that gives you both a comfortable stay and visual opportunities. Our honest assessment: the overall quality of hotels on Koh Tao is lower than on nearby islands, and the price-to-quality ratio reflects the fact that this is primarily a young traveller destination, not a resort island. That said, a few properties stand out.
Some of the best elevated views on the island and several strong compositions on the property itself. Be aware that access involves steep roads and stairways.
Jamahkiri Dive Resort and SpaSits directly on the coast with rock formations at the waterline, clear water close in, and solid views across the Gulf. A more established feel than most options on the island.
View Point ResortGood on-site restaurant, a beach with some space, and photogenic common areas with open views. Solid choice if you want a resort that photographs well without being far from the main parts of the island.
Getting to Koh Tao
Fly into Surat Thani province airport, take a 30-minute taxi to Lomprayah Tapi pier, and board the roughly 2.5-hour ferry. The cheaper route.
Fly into Koh Samui, take a 30-minute taxi to Nathon pier, and take the approximately 2-hour ferry. Costs more but saves time if your itinerary is tight.
Koh Tao has no Grab or Bolt - local taxi operators block ride-hailing apps, which means fares are significantly inflated. A short ride can cost 300 baht or more, one of the highest rates in Thailand. Most visitors rent a motorbike, which is far cheaper, but the roads to several beaches and viewpoints are steep and require experience. Factor this in when planning shoot logistics - we always do.
Most service workers on the island are from Myanmar, and with the large number of international visitors, Thai is actually a minority language in many parts of Koh Tao. English works fine for day-to-day navigation.
When to Visit for the Best Light and Weather
Koh Tao sits in the central Gulf of Thailand and follows a different weather pattern to the western islands. The most reliable months for clear skies and calm water are January to April. July to September is also generally good - often drier and more stable than May or June, which can see occasional showers but are not the main wet season. The months to avoid, if you have flexibility, are October and November, when the Gulf typically sees its heaviest rainfall.
For photography, late afternoon light year-round is the most usable window regardless of season. We schedule all sessions accordingly.
From the People Who Were There
Honestly didn't know what to expect but it was really easy. We got a load of photos we actually like, which doesn't happen often. Turnaround was fast too.
Solveig & Marcus Thalberg — Stockholm / Zurich
UX researcher and civil engineer
Got exactly what I needed. Decent light, good angles, no weird posing. I've already updated my LinkedIn and the apps. Would use again if I'm back in Thailand.
Mikael Ornskov — Copenhagen
Financial analyst
We were a bit stressed on the day as weddings go, but the photos came back really natural. Not overly edited, which was what we wanted. A few of them are going on the wall for sure. Very easy to deal with throughout.
