Booking your photographer too late is one of the most common and most preventable wedding planning mistakes. After shooting 200+ weddings in Thailand, I have watched the same thing happen repeatedly. Couples find a photographer they love in January for a March wedding and the date is already gone. This guide tells you exactly when to act and what to ask before you commit.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?
The short answer: as soon as you have a confirmed date and venue. For most weddings in Thailand, that means booking 9 to 12 months out.
Why Good Photographers Book Up So Fast
A professional wedding photographer can only take one booking per day. Some limit their bookings further, to around 4 per month, to ensure every couple gets proper attention. Thailand also has a very active destination wedding market from Europe, Australia, and Asia. A photographer you find on Instagram today may have their next three months already full.

What to Do When You Find a Photographer You Like
Do not wait. Follow these steps:
- Send an availability check right away. Include your date, venue, and approximate ceremony time. This takes two minutes.
- Look through their full portfolio, not just one gallery. Check consistency across different venues and lighting conditions.
- Schedule a call or video chat. You are going to spend your entire wedding day with this person. A 20-minute video call tells you a lot about whether the fit is right.
- Review the key details before paying. Formal contracts are not common in Thailand. Most photographers confirm via Line, email, or WhatsApp. What matters is that the session length, price, deposit amount, delivery timeline, and cancellation terms are confirmed in writing before you transfer anything.
- Pay the deposit to hold the date. A deposit of 30 to 50% is standard to confirm the booking, with the balance due after the ceremony. Until the deposit is paid, the date is not yours.

Questions to Ask Your Photographer Before Booking
Pre-Wedding Shoots: Worth Considering
A pre-wedding shoot is a 2 to 3-hour session at a location of your choice, booked separately from the wedding package. Couples who do pre-wedding shoots consistently say they felt more relaxed during their actual wedding portraits.
You already know the photographer. You have already figured out which poses feel natural. Bangkok, Khao Yai, and Pattaya are all popular locations for pre-wedding shoots, especially for international couples who arrive a few days before the ceremony.

Red Flags to Watch Out For
- No written confirmation of key details (date, price, deposit, delivery) before payment. A message thread is fine, but something in writing is not optional
- A portfolio with only highlights, never full galleries
- No clear answer to what happens in an emergency on the day
- Prices dramatically lower than every other quote you received
- Slow or inconsistent communication before booking
